An Herbalist Advice: Althaea Officinalis


     The Althaea Officinalis, better known as the marshmallow. This beautiful flower is used to heal so many different things. It is best to treat inflamed and irritated tissues of the respiratory system, digestive system, and even the skin. It is best to used to soothe the inflammation and irritation of the bowel system. But it is very well known to soothe the bladder and kidneys when it gets infected. Not only that, it neutralizes any excess acid in the stomach. For that, it comes in hand when the stomach ulcers start popping up.
     The Althaea Officinalis works great as a paste for the external purposes, such as any problems with the skin. When the flower is mixed with a bit of chamomile tea or water, the paste forms. When this paste forms, it is best used for moisturizing dry skin. Not only that, it comes in handy when using it on babies. The paste is used to soften and keep the baby’s bottom dry.
     There are many different recipes to use this flower.
     Marshmallow Baby Powder recipe:
1 part arrowroot powder
1 part cornstarch
1 part marsh mallow root powder
1-2 drops lavender essential oil

Mix all of the powders together in a bowl (preferably large), use a wire whisk to mix it. Add a drop or two of the lavender oil and whisk it in well. Cover the bowl with a thick cotton towel and let it sit overnight. Please put it in a dry room, this will allow the oil and powder to dry. Whisk again and package in a powder container for easy application.

To use this, all you need to do is sprinkle it over the baby’s bottom as needed to absorb the excess moisture.
