What Do You See? (Poem)

image

When you look at me,
What do you see?
Do you see lost hours of sleep,
Or the scars on my back?
When you look at me,
What do you see?
Do you see the trials that I’ve faced,
Or just the color of my skin?

You see, I may just be another “white” woman to you.
But that’s all you see.
Several of my ancestors were raped and sold.
They became slaves.
They escaped their habitats for a new place to live.
But everywhere they went,
They were caught and sold once again.
You see, I come from a long line of strong men and women.
From Jewish, druid, and animism.

When you look at me,
What do you see?
Do you look past the color of my skin?
The very color that makes the difference between you and I.
Underneath this skin, lies a heart and blood.
Just like you.
We’re not that different,
You and I.

Tell me, when you look at me now,
What do you see?
