Laki Penan (Poem)

image

From the day you were born,
You were born to protect.
From the day you were born,
You were born to fight.
Fight for the rights of others,
Fight for the trees and animals that this mother of ours has given us.

Hailing from Europe,
You began to start the life you were meant to live.
You became a herdsman,
You became whole.
But your heart told you to travel to a place,
A place you would call your second home.
So you made your way to Malaysia,
And found your second family.
In the midst of living the simple life,
Trouble began to brew.
Something you did not like.
You began the fight of your life to protect your family.
This fight would ultimately take you from your families.

One day you wished to climb by yourself,
You were last seen by a brother and his son.
They never got to say goodbye,
They never got to give you one last hug.
But they kept the memory of you alive in their hearts,
They kept the memory of you alive in the trees around the tribe’s homes.

You fought for the rights of others,
You fought for the environment.
It has been sixteen years since you had gone missing,
But you are still in my mind and memory of being the most selfless man in history.
